Brayden Dube’s goal with 8:27 remaining in the third period snapped a 1-1 tie, lifting the Kings to a 2-1 victory over the Steinbach Pistons in game seven of the best-of-seven championship series.

Archery club hosting 3D fun shoot

The Covid pandemic pretty much stopped the Roblin Archery Club dead in its tracks.

The club formed in 2020, thanks to the efforts of Francois Squirra, Corinne Berberat and David Sinclair, and members got about two or three practices in before pandemic restrictions were put in place and the fun came to end.

But the club reorganized this spring and is set to host its first-ever event, under the auspices of Archery Manitoba, at the Frank Skinner Arboretum Sunday, May 29.

Cenotaph rededication June 4

In conjunction with celebrating the anniversary of D-Day, the invasion of Europe by Allied forces that was the beginning of the end of World War II, the Roblin Branch #24 of the Royal Canadian Legion will be updating the Cenotaph during a special ceremony in June.

Seven fallen soldiers’ names will be added to the Cenotaph, all of them with ties to the area.

They say it’s best to travel when you’re young and that’s just what former Roblinite Kelsey Bates has discovered. 

She recently left for Thailand at the end of March to do some conservation base projects and will be there until next month. This has been something Bates has aspired to do for quite some time.

Local homeowners recognized

The Manitoba Good Roads Association (MGRA) held its 110th annual Dinner and Awards Banquet April 19 in Brandon and recognized three local home owners for their efforts in beautifying their properties and, in effect, the province.

Receiving the Jeffries Shield for Best Urban Home Grounds in Manitoba in the 1,001 to 2,000 population class were Penny Chase and Mark Boucher.

Recognition ceremony held

A large crowd of dignitaries, local groups and representatives, health care staff and residents were on hand Tuesday, May 3 to take part in a formal recognition ceremony that highlighted the plan to proceed with expanding the Russell Health Centre Chemotherapy Unit.

Deputy Premier Cliff Cullen, on behalf of Premier Heather Stefanson, said he was delighted to be in Russell to acknowledge that the long-awaited new addition to the Russell Health Centre would be proceeding to the next stages.

New owner at the bakery

The new owner of Roblin’s Parkland Bakery and Pastry Shop comes from a long line of bakers.

Wes Riedstra was born in the Netherlands and came to Canada in 2005 with his parents who settled in the Carman area and opened the Carman Bakery and Pastry Shop.

Province wants to hear from seniors

The Manitoba government is reaching out across the province to listen, learn and work collaboratively with seniors towards the development of a plan that will support older Manitobans to live as independently as they wish in their own homes for as long as it is safe to do so.

“Older Manitobans have contributed greatly to our province and have built our society,” said seniors and long-term care minister Scott Johnston announced Thursday.

Sixties Scoop victim shares her story

The Sixties Scoop is another part of Canada’s disgraceful history when in comes to the treatment of Indigenous people.

The Sixties Scoop happened from around 1960 to the mid ‘80s, when Indigenous children were removed from their homes and families and adopted or fostered to predominantly non-Indigenous families across Canada and into the U.S.

During that time frame, the provincial governments felt this was the best way of addressing Indigenous child welfare issues.
