Wendell achieving success

It has been about two years since an article appeared in the Review introducing Dr. Amy Wendell as a registered clinical psychologist who opened her private practice, Parkland Psychology & Wellness, in Russell back in 2019.
A quick search of the 188 registered psychologists in Manitoba listed on mps.ca finds that Dr. Wendell is the only doctoral-level psychologist in private practice within a two-hour radius (the closest being in Brandon).

Successful season

Three local ball players have enjoyed a very successful season suiting up for Midwest in Baseball Manitoba’s province-wide, high performance AAA League.

Maddox Andres, Reese Andres, and Carter Johnston all came home with hardware from their respective provincial championships including the gold for Johnston.

Sisters' talents being recognized

There are times when a family is blessed with an array of talented people within it and this happens to be the case in the Lynxleg family from Tootinaowaziibeing Treaty Reserve (TTR).

Two sisters, Willo and Harmony Lynxleg, are being recognized for their creative talents in designing and creating powwow regalia and beadwork.

Pyotts gearing up for music fest

Jodi Digby is hoping for a good turn out for this year’s music festival at Pyotts West Campground.

The event – which would have been Pyott’s fifth annual this year if it hadn’t been for a world-wide pandemic – is set for Aug. 19 and 20 and features almost 12 hours of music on Saturday.

Parking plebiscite coming

An issue that has been ongoing in the community for about five decades could finally be dealt with come October.

The council of the Municipality of Roblin has decided to hold a plebiscite during this fall’s municipal elections regarding angleversus parallel parking on Main Street.

Hawryluk signs with the Sens again

Jayce Hawryluk is getting another shot in the big league.

After playing last season in the Swedish Hockey League and signing with the new 3ICE league in 2022, the talented and gritty forward has signed a two-way contract with the NHL’s Ottawa Senators, the same team that had picked him up on waivers in 2020 and subsequently dealt him to Vancouver.

Scenes from the street festival

Most of Main Street was transformed into a pedestrian mall Saturday as the local chamber of commerce hosted its much-anticipated Street Fair and Summer Sidewalk Sale.

The event featured plenty of attractions including craft vendors and artisans, a farmers’ market, food vendors, plenty of activities for the kiddies, live music featuring just a small sampling of the community’s wealth of talented performers, and plenty of bargains courtesy of Main Street merchants.

Near miss with ER closure

More and more stories are coming out about peoples’ potentially dangerous experiences with ER closures in rural and northern communities.

Many people are thinking that there’s no other choice than to accept emergency room closures in rural communities as the new normal.

Most think that way, until they experience an emergent situation that requires immediate medical care.

This was the case for Mandi Addis’ 11-year-old daughter Briar.

Province hopes programs will help

The Manitoba government is investing more than $5.2 million in two programs that will help address the overall staffing shortages in the province’s health-care sector as well as increase the representation of Indigenous people in this field.

The programs were announced Thursday in Portage la Prairie by economic development, investment and trade minister Cliff Cullen and health minister Audrey Gordon.
