New CWD cases detected

Manitoba Natural Resources and Northern Development advises two additional cases of deer infected with chronic wasting disease (CWD) have been detected in Manitoba.

First detected in Manitoba in 2021, the two recent cases of CWD were identified from mandatory biological sampling submissions of animals harvested near the communities of Dropmore and Coulter where CWD was previously detected. Both cases occurred in male mule deer.

Wong takes a long road to find true beauty

Family fundraiser in Fleming

The Windsor Hotel, Bar and Grill in Fleming (SK) is hosting a fundraiser to help Kennedy Langevin and her family.

On Dec. 20 from noon to 8 p.m., all of the proceeds made from the restaurant will be donated to Langevin’s family.

MVSD holds pre-budget consultation

Mountain View School Division hosted its 2023-24 pre-budget consultation with members of the general public Dec. 5 to discuss strategies for education and what the focus will be moving forward.

“Up until this year’s budget, the partnership has been between the provincial government and our local communities,” noted MVSD board chair Floyd Martens.

Grade 1 teacher Sherri Kelbert is teaching her students about community and on Wednesday, the class took a walk to the “jewel”.

Then they talked about why they think Roblin is the Jewel of the Parkland.

It's snowmobile time

With the snow, comes snowmobile time!! So, let’s review the snowmobile regulations.

Snowmobiles have to be registered unless you are only driving it on your own private property. Youth under 14 can only operate a snowmobile under direct supervision of an adult.

Pet food drive on again

The memory of RCMP Const. Adrian Gulay still lives on and one way it does is through the annual Adrian Gulay Memorial Dog Food Donation Drive.

Adrian loved animals and was known to always have a bag of dog food in his cruiser when he was making rounds. He would often stop to feed stray dogs along the way.

The Zone opens at RES

Students at Roblin Elementary School will soon be able to “get into the zone” when they’re feeling too stressed to cope.

Thanks to grant of $75,400 from the province’s Teachers’ Idea Fund, the school is getting a dedicated space – with one staffer – to be able to offer students a private, quiet, supervised space to regulate themselves quickly and privately.

Lest we forget

Members of Roblin Branch #24 of the Royal Canadian Legion and the community took time to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country at Friday’s Remembrance Day service at the Community Centre.

The service, which was emceed by Branch #24 President Wes Smigelsky, above at right, offered some poignant reminders of those who died serving their nation.

Help for health care

The Manitoba government is implementing a health human resource action plan moving to end mandating overtime by adding 2,000 health-care professionals with an investment of $200 million to retain, train and recruit health-care staff across the province

“Manitobans, and all Canadians, expect their leaders to come together to solve issues that matter most to them. We are listening and we are taking action,” said Premier Heather Stefanson in announcing the plan.
