Vermeylen raises concerns
A descendant of the Red River Métis and a spokesperson for the Métis Rights Coalition (MRC) says he has some serious concerns about the so-called Manitoba Métis Federation “government” and where the organization is headed.
“Maybe to some people this is not serious but to me, it’s very serious,” said a concerned Charlie Vermeylen.

Results from Russell
The North Western Marquette Festival of the Arts was held in Russell March 14, 15 and 16 with 44 entries in the dance competition, 48 entries for piano and 12 in the vocal category, which inlcued five school choirs.
The adjudicator for Dance was Tamara Topsnik Hicks from Brandon and Winnipeg’s Theresa Thordarson took care of judging Piano and Vocal entries.
The Speech Arts portion took place in February with some 15 entries.

Wowchuk wins nod uncontested
Election time is just around the corner and many political parties are lining up and announcing their candidates for certain ridings.
The Swan River constituency’s Progressive Conservative (PC) Association held its candidate selection meeting March 30 in Swan River at the Westwood Inn where MLA Rick Wowchuk won an uncontested nomination.

Outfitters lose their licences
Manitoba Natural Resources and Northern Development is advising that outfitting licences of two resource tourism operators in the Grandview area have been cancelled.
The move comes after a lengthy investigation led by the Manitoba Conservation Officer Service along with Canadian and American wildlife investigators.

Chamber holds AGM
The Roblin District Chamber of Commerce held its AGM March 24 and it was, as they say, short, sweet and to the point.
About 45 people turned out at the Life & Art Centre for the evening, which included pizza and a beer tasting and the musical stylings of Amy Wendell and Ed Doering.

The Passover coming to the EMC
When community members get together and put on a play or musical, it brings a certain energy and level of excitement with it.
Roblin Evangelical Mission Church’s (REMC) Jenni Johnson has embarked on the undertaking of organizing a musical about Passover, with many of the cast members being from the congregation.

Sextortion investigated
RCMP have investigated a report of sextortion. Person had sent nude photos to someone they thought was real, but it was a scam. Person was told to buy gift cards or the pictures would become public. No money was lost.
Please do not send naked photos of yourself to anyone and if you for some reason decide to do this, do not include your face.

Trustees pass budget
Mountain View School Division has budgeted for a small deficit for the 2023-24 school year to leave current programming intact.
The budget was passed March 21 at a special meeting of the board.
“We faced many uncertainties in the preparation and finalization of the 2023-2024 operating budget. This made the process very challenging this year and the board passed a budget with a small deficit,” said board chair Floyd Martens, who noted that additional funding in the 2022-23 school year will offset the deficit that the division is budgeting.

Handivan costs too high
A Roblin man who uses the Handivan three times a week to receive life-saving dialysis at the Russell Health Centre says the rate he’s being charged for the trips is excessive.
“Last year it cost me nearly $21,000,” said Tom Wilson, who recently met with municipal council to discuss a reduced rate. “They did reduce the rate – from $160 per trip to $125 per trip – but that’s still going to cost me $1,500 a month. And I don’t know how much longer I’ll be able to afford that.

Troxler wins Men's
There was no defending champion in the first event in the 2023 version of Roblin’s annual Men’s Bonspiel.
The spiel returned after its Covid induced hiatus March 9 to 11 with 14 rinks taking to the ice at the curling rink with Werner Troxler running Greg Clark out of rocks to take the first event.
