The Dauphin Clippers baseball team finally hit the diamond for a pair of games recently.
The Clippers opened the season with a 10-0 loss to the Swan Valley Tigers, May 8. Dauphin then hosted the Birtle Falcons, May 15, losing 15-2.
A road game in Roblin and a home game against Neelin were postponed and will be rescheduled to a later date.
Clippers coach Don Sheldon said it has been a tough situation when it comes to the weather this spring.
“Our first two experiences on the diamond have both been games. So things that normally, we’d be able to work out in scrimmage or practice, we’re having to work out mid-game,” he said.
Given the lack of practice and playing time, Sheldon could not really expect much more from the Clippers in their two losses.
“Nobody on this team played baseball last year. And some of them haven’t played for two-plus years. And so we’re kind of starting at ground-zero,” he said. “We’re just looking to build towards the future and get our footing under us for this season.”
The Clippers are scheduled to play in Russell on Wednesday against the Major Pratt Trojans, before hosting the Ste. Rose Celtics, Friday at 6 p.m.
The Clippers are slated to practice, Tuesday and Thursday, but with rain in the forecast, they may not be able to.
“Hopefully that happens and Mother Nature co-operates. We can’t control the weather. We can only control what we can control,” Sheldon said.
Sheldon is in talks with the others teams to reschedule the postponed contests. Sunday’s game was the first time the Clippers were allowed onto the diamond at the Vermillion Park Sportsplex, so they could not reschedule any games before that, Sheldon said.
“Hopefully we can get these last few of weeks of the season in, because the high school season is short to begin with. It’s really hard to make things up,” he said.
