New face in the Chamber office

The new executive director of the Roblin & District Chamber of Commerce is looking forward to helping the community in a different way.
Since relocating to Roblin from Winnipeg about five years ago, Suzanne McSkimming has tried really hard to be community-minded and has been “volunteering for absolutely everything”.

Cottage Cove homeowners concerned

Residents of the Cottage Cove housing development at the Asessippi Ski Resort are raising concerns about a proposed gravel pit in their backyard.
Cottage Cove sits directly south of the pit proposed in a Conditional Use application to the RM of Riding Mountain – dated August 23, 2025 – by Russell Redi-Mix.

Daughter hosts run for mom

In February of 2021 the area was shocked at the sudden passing of Karen Fingas, a mother of four young children and much loved LPN at the Russell Personal Care Home, just eight days after her diagnosis of stomach cancer.
Now, after hearing Terry Fox’s older brother Fred talk at Major Pratt, earlier this month, Craig and Karen Fingas’ eldest daughter Elizabeth, is organizing and hosting ‘A Run For You’ in her honor and in aid of the Manitoba Cancer Care Unit in Russell.

Like the iconic prairie grain elevator, the rural elementary school has vanished from the Western Canadian landscape. It has been almost 55 years since rural municipal by-laws in Manitoba were executed to legally declare the rural elementary school a non-entity.
In 1967 this legal process to dissolve rural elementary school districts occurred in more than 2,000 rural school districts across Manitoba. The historical sequence of the critical by-laws pertaining to the creation and dissolution of Gleneden School District # 1465 is outlined here.

Review cartoonist wins award

Patrick LaMontagne, an editorial cartoonist whose work appears in the Roblin Review and in newspapers across Canada, has been awarded third place in the 26th World Press Freedom Canada International Editorial Cartoon Contest.
The contest is organized by World Press Freedom Canada, a national organization that advocates for press freedom.

Bield Hall turning 50

The Bield Community Centre – or the Bield Hall as it’s more often and lovingly referred to – will be turning 50 years old this June and the Bield Ladies Club is planning a big party to celebrate.
Completed in June, 1976, the hall was built by the community, for the community, after the original facility (once Bield School) was destroyed by fire in 1973.
