The only thing better than a win in sports is a dramatic come from behind victory. And that’s what the Waywayseecappo Wolverines accomplished Friday night in Swan River, stunning the crowd with late outburst to steal two points from their expansion cousins.

Wayway’s victory was so complete that I even heard the 50-50 pot went back south with a Wolverines fan.

Wayway Head Coach and General Manager Landyn Cochrane said though his team trailed for much of the night, there was always a belief that they could come back.

“We kept on pressing all of the second and third period, and I knew once we finally got one we would be rolling.”

Wolverines 5, Stampeders 3 (EN)

Nothing was working for the Wolverines through 50 minutes in Swan River Friday night, as they fell behind 3-0 to the host Stampeders. But the visitors kept clawing, and ended up pulling off a stunning comeback, winning 5-3 (EN).

They fell behind 3-0 midway through the third period, but they didn’t give up. Blake Farthing (second) got the comeback going with 6:58 left in regulation. By the time the period was over the Wolverines had scored four more times to earn their fourth win of the year.

Max Collyer (third), Carter Haney (fourth), and Ian Buors (third, fourth) had the rest of the Wayway goals. Bours scored the game-winner and the insurance goal into the empty net.

“Ian is a player that has a knack for the back of the net,” says Cochrane. “He was all around the puck all game and it was great to see him get rewarded.”

Urijah Moosetail earned the win in goal, stopping 35 shots, out-dueling Easton Falls from the Stamps for the win.

“We had a ton of chances but Easton was playing very solid,” added Cochrane. “Once we got the first past him, it gave us all the belief we needed, and kept peppering pucks on net.”

Wolverines 4, Kings 1

On National Truth and Reconciliation Day, the hometown Waywayseecappo Wolverines honoured their fans with a solid 4-1 victory.

After spotting the Kings an early 1-0 lead the Wolverines scored four straight in the first period in the span of 6:39.

Three Wolverines netted their first goals of the year in the win – Blake Farthing, Isaac Catcheway and defenseman of the month Cale Livingston (see MJHL column for more details on that). Liam Flett scored his second to round out the scoring.

Mariko Bercier earned the win with a 21-save effort.

Up next

Wayway has a very busy stretch where they play four games in eight nights, starting tonight (Tuesday) in Swan River against the Swan Valley Stampeders. This will be the second straight meeting between the two teams.

The Wolverines then return home for back-to-back games against the visiting Winnipeg Monarchs. The two teams will clash Friday and Saturday night, with puck drop at 7:30 p.m.

Wayway also plays next Tuesday night in Neepawa as they take on divisional rivals, the Neepawa Titans.

CLAW MARKS – With their win Friday the Wolverines temporarily moved into first place in the West Division … Carter Haney leads the Wolverines with nine points.
